I never really gave cookies a second thought. Like many of you, I grew up on Chocolate chip cookies with the recipe from the back of the bag. They were good. It never occurred to me that they could be great. That is, until I was a struggling artist a thousand miles from family and desperate for something from home. I found comfort in baking, but it wasn’t necessarily delicious.
Why settle? My favorite Cheeseburger in Philly is at Prohibition Tap Room, my favorite Nachos at Dos Segundos, and my favorite cookies in the world. . in my own kitchen. It only took 5 years. It wasn’t long until I thought, why aren’t there new cookies? Cookies for grown ups? There are video games for grown ups. Why aren’t there cookies for my way of life? This would include, something sweet, salty, and sometimes a strong drink.
I’m primarily a singer, and songwriter. A lot of my baking experience came on the road and a lot of my taste testers were my collaborators. I’ll never forget bringing Lupe one of my first batches of Choc. Chip Cookies and him saying. .”These are really… . hard.” Mortified. I scratched that recipe. Started making custom recipes, and giving away cookies to fans standing in line outside the venues. It was rewarding work.
Many people have suggested I start a bakery, or cookie company. I did for a little while, when Columbia Records declined to put my record out (read as “dropped me”) I started an impromptu version of the cookie company to pay the rent. It worked. Music is my first love. When I FINALLY put out my first album and people were asking more about cookies than music, the cookie biz went on hiatus indefinitely.
This is my season. I love the holidays. I’m one of those people that “love with food.” I hear that’s common among Midwestern girls. In the past we’ve had parties filled with dozens of different kinds of cookies I bake myself, I’ve dubbed them Cookie Socials. They have a DJ, live performances, drink pairings, and of course COOKIES!
This year I’d like to do it again, a Holiday Cookie Social in Philadelphia. The money we’re raising will be used to fund the cost of the cookie social (venue, flour, etc.), my friends are performing free of charge. So come if you can, invest if you’re able. It will be a good time, with great people and even better cookies.
